I went to pick Bubba up today (without the car seat – I forgot to put it back in after taking it out to put the back seat down) and he looked gorgeous in his little elf outfit. After a fit because he thought Nanny was leaving without him, his Mum drove him over to my place and we fixed the car seat situation. I got some photos and video of him playing with the Christmas decorations, he is hilarious…and then he had a big sleep so he wouldn’t be tired for our outing to have a photo with Santa at Myer.
This video is of him with Courtney’s animated penguins. He’s fascinated by the bell on the baby penguin and smacks it around to make it ring.
When I was a child, it was family tradition to dress up and take a trip into the city to have our photo taken with Santa at Myer. I wanted to have the same tradition but, as nice as the props are, I’m not sure the hideous prices are worth it.
Anyway, Courtney and I drove in and, after an hour and a half stuck in a traffic jam, parked at Crown. We took Bubba to see the set up in the Crown foyer first and he was captivated (as was his Aunty Courtney). Every half hour, the animated program runs and then the choir comes out for carols. It was nice.
Our next idea was to take Bubba on his first tram ride. He knows trains say “Toot, toot” and trams say “ding, ding” but he doesn’t get to see them much. Unfortunately, there were no trams in sight and, as it was only 4 blocks and it was getting late, we decided to walk to Myer.
Santaland has a train that runs the perimeter which is kind of cute but Bubba is too small for it. We went in to see Santa but, guess what…Bubba wouldn’t have a bar of him. Wouldn’t even sit on Courtney’s or my lap if we were near Santa. Loved the Rudolph on the floor, Santa’s bell and the photographer (who he asked to pick him up so he could see the computer) but Santa – no way. So, we didn’t get a photo.
Once we were outside, we were standing near the fence watching the train when the driver asked if Bubba would like a ride. I said he was too small to sit by himself, so she asked whether he would like to drive with her. I handed him over the fence, worried that he might not like the stranger but, given she wasn’t dressed in a freaky red suit with a beard, he was fine. He had a ball driving the train with her and even got to ring the bell. We did get a photo of that.
We walked back to the car through the city at dusk and it was really quite pretty. Bubba was tired but was not going to miss a thing. He loves trucks and, despite his obvious exhaustion, didn’t want to miss any on the highway. We came to a property that was all lit up and let you drive in, so we did and Bubba had his final walk around their display before finally giving in at 11pm. He slept like a log until 8am the next morning.
He’s coming to visit again tonight and tomorrow but we are going to do some gardening at home. Next week, I’m going to try one last time to get a photo of him with Santa. This time we’ll go to Epping Plaza and see if they will take it with him just standing nearby. It will be a record of his cautious relationship with the bearded man.
